St. Clare of Assisi was an Italian saint and one of the first followers of St. Francis of Assisi. Born in 1194 into a wealthy noble family, she was deeply inspired by St. Francis' teachings and, at the age of 18, renounced her noble heritage to live a life of poverty and piety. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, also known as the Poor Clares, at San Damiano, which was an order for women in the Franciscan tradition.
St. Clare led her order under a strict rule that emphasized poverty and the complete reliance on alms, which was a radical choice at the time. Her commitment to this austere life attracted many followers. She is known for her deep spiritual insight, her steadfast devotion, and her strong leadership qualities. Clare was also known for her miracle of repelling an attack on Assisi by praying before the Blessed Sacrament, which made her the subject of much veneration.
She was canonized in 1255, just two years after her death, and her feast day is celebrated on August 11th. St. Clare is the patron saint of television, eye disease, goldsmiths, and laundry, reflecting both her time spent in reflection (symbolized by the clearness of television) and her humble work during her life.
