St. Roch (c. 1295 – 1327) was a French pilgrim and healer known for his care of plague victims. According to tradition, he miraculously healed many people by making the Sign of the Cross. While caring for the sick, he himself contracted the plague and withdrew to the forest, where he was cared for by a dog who brought him bread and licked his wounds—leading to his common depiction with a dog by his side.

St. Roch is widely venerated as the patron saint of plague victims, dogs, and the sick, especially during times of epidemic. His feast day is celebrated on August 16.
