The Ascension took place forty days after the Resurrection, when Jesus gathered His disciples on the Mount of Olives. There He spoke words of final instruction, commissioning them to go into the world and proclaim the Gospel to all nations. Promising the gift of the Holy Spirit, He assured them, “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Then, as they watched, He was lifted up into heaven, returning to the Father in glory, and a cloud took Him from their sight. The Ascension reveals Christ’s exaltation and the completion of His earthly mission, as well as the beginning of the Church’s mission on earth. It calls us to set our hearts on the things of heaven, to live in hope of our own union with God, and to carry the light of Christ into the world until He comes again.
