Our Lady of Guadalupe refers to the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary after her apparitions to Saint Juan Diego in 1531 on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City. She is depicted as a young woman with olive or dark skin, clothed in a richly adorned red dress with a blue-green mantle starred with gold, often with a black belt signifying pregnancy. Her hands are joined in prayer, and she is surrounded by rays of sunlight, standing atop a crescent moon supported by an angel. The image is renowned for its miraculous nature, as it is said to have been miraculously imprinted on Juan Diego's cloak (tilma). Our Lady of Guadalupe is a powerful symbol of Mexican identity and faith, and she is celebrated as the Patroness of the Americas.
