Saint Andrew the Apostle, also known as Andrew the Protoclete ("First-Called"), is a prominent figure in Christianity, known for being one of the twelve original apostles of Jesus Christ and the brother of Saint Peter. According to Christian tradition, Andrew was born in Bethsaida in the early 1st century AD and was initially a disciple of John the Baptist before following Jesus.
Andrew is recognized for introducing his brother, Peter, to Jesus, significantly influencing the early Christian Church's formation. The Gospel accounts highlight his role in several key moments, such as the feeding of the 5,000, where it was Andrew who mentioned the boy with the loaves and fishes to Jesus.
After the Ascension of Christ, Andrew is believed to have spread the Gospel in various parts of Eastern Europe and Asia Minor. According to tradition, he was martyred by crucifixion in Patras, Greece, on an X-shaped cross, which has come to be known as Saint Andrew's Cross.
Saint Andrew is the patron saint of several countries, including Scotland, Russia, and Greece. His feast day is celebrated on November 30th. His symbols often include the X-shaped cross and a fish, representing his early life as a fisherman and his role as a "fisher of men" for Christ.
