Saint Augustine of Hippo was a theologian and philosopher who lived from 354 to 430 AD, becoming one of the most influential figures in Christian history. Born in present-day Algeria in the Roman province of Numidia, Augustine spent much of his early life in pursuit of a career in rhetoric, leading a lifestyle he would later regard as sinful and hedonistic. His conversion to Christianity at the age of 31, after a profound personal crisis and the influence of his mother, Saint Monica, marked a turning point in his life.
Augustine became the Bishop of Hippo Regius (modern-day Annaba, Algeria) and was a prolific writer, penning about 5 million words that have survived to the present day. His works, including "Confessions," a deeply personal account of his spiritual journey, and "The City of God," a defense of Christianity over pagan religions following the sack of Rome, laid foundational concepts for Western Christian thought and philosophy.
His teachings on grace, free will, original sin, and predestination have had a lasting impact on both Roman Catholic and Protestant theology. Augustine's ideas about the nature of the church, the relationship between faith and reason, and the interpretation of the Bible have shaped Christian doctrine through the centuries. He was canonized by popular acclaim, and his feast day is celebrated on August 28th, the day of his death.
