Saint Bernadette Soubirous is best known for her visions of the Virgin Mary in a small grotto in Lourdes, France, in 1858. Born Marie-Bernarde Soubirous in 1844, in Lourdes, she was a shepherdess who experienced 18 visions of the Virgin Mary during a five-month period at the Massabielle grotto. During these visions, she was instructed by Mary to "pray for sinners" and requested that a chapel be built at the site of the visions. The spring water from the grotto was revealed to her by the Virgin Mary, and it quickly became famous for its healing properties, leading to Lourdes' prominence as a pilgrimage site.

Bernadette faced skepticism and interrogation by both civil and church authorities but maintained her claims about the visions. She later joined the Sisters of Charity in Nevers, where she lived a life marked by humility and simplicity until her death in 1879. Saint Bernadette was canonized in 1933, recognized for her deep spirituality and enduring faith amid suffering. Her feast day is celebrated on April 16th.
