Saint Bridget of Sweden, also known as Birgitta of Vadstena, was a prominent medieval mystic and saint, known for her religious visions and the religious order she founded, the Bridgettines or the Order of the Most Holy Savior. Born in 1303 into a noble family, Bridget became known for her piety from an early age. After her husband's death, she became increasingly devoted to her religious life and began experiencing visions, which she believed were messages from Christ and the Virgin Mary.
These visions prompted her to undertake pilgrimages to holy sites across Europe, including Rome, where she lived for many years. Saint Bridget’s visions also led her to advocate for church reform and the return of the papacy from Avignon to Rome. Her writings, which include revelations and prophecies, were influential during her time and remain studied today.
She founded her order primarily to organize a religious community that observed rigorous spiritual and physical disciplines. She died in Rome in 1373 and was canonized in 1391. Saint Bridget is one of the six patron saints of Europe, celebrated for her profound spiritual insights and contributions to Christian theology. Her feast day is celebrated on July 23rd.
