St. Catherine of Alexandria, also known as St. Catherine of the Wheel, was a Christian saint and martyr who is believed to have lived in the early 4th century in Alexandria, Egypt. According to tradition, she was of noble birth, possibly a princess, and renowned for her intelligence, education, and beauty. Catherine converted to Christianity in her youth and is famous for having successfully debated fifty pagan philosophers who were summoned by the Roman Emperor Maxentius to refute her beliefs. However, she not only converted many of her adversaries but also refused to renounce her faith, leading to her imprisonment and execution.

Catherine was condemned to death on a spiked breaking wheel, but it miraculously broke when she touched it. Therefore, she was beheaded instead. She is venerated as a patron saint of students, philosophers, and scholars and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers in Roman Catholicism. Her feast day is celebrated on November 25th. St. Catherine's story has been immensely popular in the Christian tradition, inspiring artistic and literary works through the ages.
