St. Charbel, also known as St. Charbel Makhlouf, was a Lebanese Maronite monk and priest who is venerated in the Catholic Church. Born Youssef Antoun Makhlouf in 1828 in a small village in Lebanon, he entered the Maronite Monastery of St. Maron in Annaya at the age of 23 and took the name Charbel, after a 2nd-century martyr. He was ordained a priest in 1859 and lived a life marked by extreme asceticism and devotion to prayer.

St. Charbel spent 23 years in the monastery before retreating to a hermitage, where he spent the last 23 years of his life in severe penance and solitude, dedicating himself to rigorous spiritual practices. He passed away on December 24, 1898, and was known for his miraculous intercessions both during his life and posthumously, especially in healing the sick.

Following his death, reports of miraculous occurrences associated with his intercession began to spread, leading to a growing devotion to him. He was beatified in 1965 and canonized in 1977 by Pope Paul VI. St. Charbel is celebrated on July 24th and is particularly revered in Lebanon and throughout the Middle East, as well as by people around the world.
