Saint Edith Stein, also known as Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, was a German Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism and became a Discalced Carmelite nun. Born in 1891 in Breslau, Germany (now Wrocław, Poland), she was an accomplished academic, deeply engaged in philosophy with a particular interest in phenomenology. Her conversion in 1922 was heavily influenced by her studies and the autobiography of St. Teresa of Ávila. During the rise of Nazism, her heritage led to her arrest and she was eventually martyred in Auschwitz in 1942. Canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1998, she is celebrated for her intellectual depth, spiritual writings, and is revered as a martyr of the Holocaust. Her feast day is observed on August 9th.
