Saint Gertrude the Great was a German Benedictine nun, mystic, and theologian of the 13th century. Born on January 6, 1256, in Eisleben, Thuringia, she entered the monastery of Helfta at a young age, where she received a thorough education that was unusual for women of her time.
Gertrude is best known for her deep mystical experiences and spiritual writings, primarily her major work, "The Herald of Divine Love" (Legatus Divinae Pietatis), and her exercises of piety that are recorded in her book "Spiritual Exercises." Her writings emphasize the heart's love towards the divine, particularly a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which has had a lasting influence on Christian spirituality.
She reported visions and conversations with Jesus, which became key sources of her theological work and helped spread the practice of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Saint Gertrude's contributions to mysticism and her role in the development of Christian spirituality, particularly in regards to personal devotion and the liturgy, make her one of the prominent female mystics of the Middle Ages.
Her feast day is celebrated on November 16th, and she is often invoked for souls in purgatory and is also considered a patron of travelers.
