Saint John of the Cross, a Spanish mystic, priest, and a prominent figure of the Catholic Reformation, was born in 1542 and died in 1591. He is renowned for his profound poetry and writings on the spiritual path to union with God, particularly through the concept of the "dark night of the soul," which describes the journey of purgation and illumination leading to divine union. John co-founded the Discalced Carmelites with Saint Teresa of Ávila, reforming the Carmelite Order. His works, including "Ascent of Mount Carmel" and "Spiritual Canticle," are considered cornerstones of Christian mysticism. Canonized as a saint in 1726, his teachings emphasize the growth of the soul through detachment, humility, and the love of God.
