Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," was the first Native American saint. Born in 1656 in what is now New York state, she was the daughter of a Mohawk chief and an Algonquin-Christian mother. After losing her family to a smallpox epidemic, which also left her with severe scarring and impaired eyesight, she was raised by relatives who opposed her Christian faith.

Kateri converted to Christianity at age 19, influenced by Jesuit missionaries. Her decision led to persecution and ostracism within her tribe. Seeking a community that shared her faith, she fled to a Christian Native American village near Montreal, where she was known for her piety, chastity, and devotion to the Eucharist and the cross.

Kateri dedicated her life to prayer, penitential practices, and caring for the sick and elderly. She died at the young age of 24 in 1680. Witnesses reported that within minutes of her death, her scars vanished and her face appeared radiant and beautiful. Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. Her feast day is celebrated on July 14th, and she is the patroness of the environment and ecology, reflecting her deep respect and love for nature.
