Saint Mary MacKillop, also known as Saint Mary of the Cross, was an Australian nun born on January 15, 1842, in Melbourne, Australia. She co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart (the Josephites) in 1866 with Father Julian Tenison Woods, focusing on the education and welfare of the poor, particularly in rural areas.

Mary MacKillop's work involved establishing schools, orphanages, and charitable institutions throughout Australia and New Zealand. She faced significant opposition, including excommunication at one point, but remained steadfast in her mission. Her excommunication was later lifted, and her dedication continued to inspire many.

Known for her deep faith, resilience, and commitment to social justice, Mary MacKillop passed away on August 8, 1909. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 17, 2010, becoming Australia's first saint. Her feast day is celebrated on August 8. Saint Mary MacKillop is remembered for her pioneering work in education and her unwavering dedication to helping those in need.
