Saint Rose of Lima, born Isabel Flores de Oliva in 1586 in Lima, Peru, is the first canonized saint of the Americas. She was known for her deep spiritual life, penance, and commitment to the poor and sick. From an early age, Rose devoted herself to Jesus, practicing severe penances in secret. Despite her family's poverty, she worked in the garden and sewed to help them, while dedicating her nights to prayer and penance in a small hut in their garden. Rose took a vow of virginity early in life and joined the Third Order of Saint Dominic. She was admired for her beauty, which she considered a distraction, leading her to disfigure her face with pepper and lye. Rose died in 1617, at the age of 31, and was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. She is the patron saint of Peru, the Indigenous people of the Americas, gardeners, florists, and those ridiculed for their piety.
