Saint Teresa of Ávila, born Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada in 1515 in Gotarrendura, Spain, was a prominent Spanish mystic, religious reformer, author, and theologian of the Roman Catholic Church. She is one of the principal figures of the Counter-Reformation and is best known for founding the Discalced Carmelites along with Saint John of the Cross.

Teresa entered the Carmelite convent of the Incarnation in Ávila in 1535 and experienced profound spiritual awakenings, which she documented in her writings. Among her most notable works is "The Interior Castle," in which she describes the soul's progress through seven stages of spiritual development, and "The Way of Perfection," a guide to Christian prayer and practice.

Teresa worked tirelessly for the reform of the Carmelite order, striving for a return to poverty and contemplation. Her efforts led to the establishment of many convents and monasteries throughout Spain.

Saint Teresa of Ávila was canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV and was later named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970, the first woman to be so honored, in recognition of her significant contributions to Catholic theology and spirituality. She is the patron saint of headache sufferers and Spanish Catholic writers. Teresa died in 1582 in Alba de Tormes, Spain.
