Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, also known as Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, was a French Carmelite nun who is widely venerated in modern times as one of the most popular Catholic saints. Born on January 2, 1873, in Alençon, France, she died at a young age of 24, on September 30, 1897, in Lisieux, France. Thérèse is best known for her spiritual memoir, "Story of a Soul," which she wrote at the command of her superiors in the convent and which was published posthumously. In this work, she describes her approach to the spiritual life, now known as "the little way," which is characterized by an attitude of humility, simplicity, and trust in God's love and mercy.
Thérèse's spirituality and message of childlike faith and devotion to God and love for others have had a profound influence on Catholic thought and spirituality. She was canonized a saint by Pope Pius XI in 1925, less than 30 years after her death, and was later declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II in 1997 for her significant impact on Christian theology. Saint Thérèse is the patron saint of missions, florists, and loss of parents, among other things, and her feast day is celebrated on October 1st.
